Poker is played by betting in rounds, each with a designated betting interval. After each round, a player may check or raise. At the end of the first round, the player to the left of the big blind is the first to act. He or she must bet at least the minimum in each betting interval. Each player can also shuffle the cards before the deal. Usually, the house dealer handles the cards for each hand. For each hand, the dealer cuts one card from the deck. One of the cards is then shown in profile.

Some poker variations require players to make a forced bet, also known as the ante. This is usually the amount of money a player has to put into the pot before the deal begins. When a player has no other bets, they can go all-in. By doing this, they can reveal their hand and claim the remaining chips.
